Big Leopard Gecko – An Introduction to This Rare Breed

Published on Friday, August 27, 2010 by

Speculations have been going around about the big leopard gecko. As you browse through the net enthusiasts or hobbyist came up with different opinions based on their experiences and studies. However, there are a few who were able to provide pictures of their big geckos. It is so amazing to see geckos that big.

Some claimed that the Hoplodactylus delacourti was the largest gecko so far but are now an extinct species. Others also said that the New Caledonian giant is the biggest which measures about 14.5 inches in length.

Tokay geckos are also considered big when having grown as large as 14 inches long measured from tip to tip and are said to be a very aggressive reptile. There is one hobbyist who said that his Tokay grew as long as 15.8 inches and will soon share a picture of his pet.

But somehow the majority of owners recognize that the New Caledonia geckos are the largest ones.
Big or giant leopard geckos are also nocturnal in nature. They love to go around crawling on trees to look for food such as insects, spiders, or even other geckos that they see. They even like a taste of the nectars from flowers. On the contrary captive leopards are enticed with baby fruit-flavored food. Remember not to overfeed your gecko, you might be overwhelmed of his delicious appetite and feed him more than what is enough.

Leopards or leachies as they are also called enjoy climbing on branches and hide from the daylight. They would normally go inside the branches to seek for shelter. When nightfall comes geckos would slowly come out from their hiding place and search for food. This is the normal and routinely feeding schedule of a leopard that why the reasonable time to feed your gecko pets is during the night.

Big leopards and the regular sized leopards have the same traits and characteristics. Male leachies should be separated from each other. Never place two males on one tank to avoid fighting. Males are very aggressive and when place together in one tank causes fighting. If ignored or tolerated it will cause the dropping of their tails. Although geckos have the ability to re-grow their tails it is not good for them to be left in a stressful situation.

Frequent stress is also not good for them. Geckos get to live a long lifespan of about fifteen to twenty years if adequate care is given. Hygiene is also important, clean the tank frequently and pick out all leftover foods, and remove also shed skin. If your gecko is experiencing retained skin help your pet by soaking geckos in warm water or place him in a plastic bag with damp towels for 30 minutes or until the skin has totally shed. To avoid retained skin from happening it is best to keep adequate humidity in their tank.

The new Caledonian giant gecko was described as the largest gecko in the world by George Cuvier in 1829. It reaches about 14 inches long. Caledonians have this fleshy folded skin which makes it comfortable to handle by anyone. But this fact is not true to all species as there a few who cannot tolerate human touch.

Be careful in handling a big leopard gecko as they have the tendency to jump out from your hand to anything they can go to. So if breakable items are around pay extra attention.
