The woolly jumper: Lavender the leaping ram is ahead of the field

Published on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 by

You’ve probably seen a few jumping sheep while trying to get some sleep – but we doubt you’ve seen anything quite like this.

Sprightly ram Lavender saved himself from the slaughterhouse by showing off his talent for leaping through the air.

The two-year-old has even reached a personal best of 1m (3ft) thanks to owner Isobel Brown, who shouts words of encouragement as Lavender jumps fences and streams.

‘I train him once a day – as much as possible basically – when I’m free and he follows me around,’ said 13-year-old Isobel. The teenager has a trick – or treat – up her sleeve when Lavender needs a little persuading to train near Ellastone, Staffordshire.

‘He likes anything – from corn to croissants – he’s very greedy. He even started licking my drinking bottle a few weeks ago – it had Ribena in it and he now can’t get enough of that either,’ she said. ‘I show him a jump, I jump it and then he follows me – most of the time.

‘And if not I have to stand over the jump, with one leg each side and entice him over. And then he knows to jump it and gets rewarded.

‘He’s not a perfect specimen for breeding and was going to go for slaughter but granddad now says I can keep him.’

Her mother, Victoria Goodall, said: ‘Isobel absolutely adores him. He’s just like a pet. She goes after school and makes sure he’s OK and talks to him.’
